This volume took me utterly by surprise, I must say。 I have issues with the character development in this series in general, so I won't comment on the new addition here, but the journey away from Japan definitely sets the scene for some real intrigue。 For some reason, even after encountering the "WHYs" in the previous volume, I didn't feel as though the characters were actually in danger。 Thanks to this volume, I do。 Seems as though there's a real threat hanging over their heads, now; one much m This volume took me utterly by surprise, I must say。 I have issues with the character development in this series in general, so I won't comment on the new addition here, but the journey away from Japan definitely sets the scene for some real intrigue。 For some reason, even after encountering the "WHYs" in the previous volume, I didn't feel as though the characters were actually in danger。 Thanks to this volume, I do。 Seems as though there's a real threat hanging over their heads, now; one much more sinister than Tsukasa。 。。。more

And Kohaku makeover next! Its a great one and reveals so much as answers to the mysterious petrification beam may come soon and also Senku is getting new challenges now, on the brink of discovering some new phenomenon and maybe face off against his greatest villain! Okay, here we go!So, I had an epiphany after finishing this volume: none of the female characters are that interesting/memorable。 *cue gasps, jaws dropping, and angry, disapproving murmurs*。 I want to make it clear before I continue that I'm not saying these characters are badly written characters, but that they aren't that interesting in grand scheme of the series and, most importantly, don't hold up to other female Shounen Jump protagonists。I have been consuming Shounen Jump entertainment since I was kid and even back then I would hear people lamenting how there weren't any great female characters that they could relate to。 My counter argument at the time was, why do you have to be the same gender to relate to someone? Granted now that I'm older I understand the issue with my counter argument, but quite frankly there were still some badass women/girls in Shounen Jump titles。 Yes, they didn't as much screen time as the boys/men, but are you really going to sit there and say Bulma wasn't fucking fearless or how unflappable and badass Genkai was? It's not there weren't any, they just didn't get as much screen time。 And it's only gotten better over time; My Hero Academia has an abundance of strong, fierce ladies, The Promised Neverland has a smart, strong, and empathetic leading lady, and Demon Slayer has four AWESOME badass women that are strong and complex。 What I'm getting at here is that there have always been great female characters past and present, so there's really no excuse as to why Dr。 Stone's ladies are so woefully underdeveloped and uninteresting。Again, I want to reiterate that these characters aren't poorly written, trust me I've read enough manga to spot those。 My main problem is that compared to other Shounen Jump titles Dr。 Stone probably has the weakest set of female characters。 Kohaku is probably the most developed, but even then she's just physically strong, loves her sister, acts on instinct, and is willing to go along with whatever science-y stuff Senku wants to do。 This isn't bad, it's just not interesting or engaging。 If this was a slice of life series about rebuilding civilization than I could let this pass, but this is an action/adventure series with some slice of life elements woven in。 And considering she was introduced in the second volume and this is all that there is to her character? That's weak, ESPECIALLY considering that I just finished reading the 14th volume of Demon Slayer today which gave backstory to one of only four female characters AND managed to break down gender stereotypes while maintaining her bubbly and energetic personality。 Btw, she was introduced in the 6TH VOLUME and has only been present in the last THREE VOLUMES and she's easily a better written character than Kohaku。 Speaking of gender stereotypes。。。What prompted this rant was the final chapter of this volume。 In it, we learn that the master of this village holds a "harem selection process" (because OF COURSE he does, he's a MAN) and one of the villagers wants to use it to sneak in and grab an important item。 She isn't a fighter though, so it's decided that Kohaku should participate in the process too, but oh WAIT! The master only likes CUTE girls, and Kohaku's too tomboyish to be labelled CUTE, RIGHT?!*deep breath* first of all, the current year in the story is 5741。 Are you ACTUALLY TELLING ME that it's been 3,721 years since humanity was petrified and WE STILL HAVE FUCKING GENDER STEREOTYPES?! WHY??????? WHY IS THIS STILL A THING?! Were none of the people who crashed into that island progressive at ALL and just passed down their fucking shitty gender stereotypes for over 3,700 years?! Also, it is FUCKING 2020, WHY are we still using the "tomboy is forced to be traditionally feminine" trope?! It is so FUCKING outdated, I couldn't believe we're really going this route in terms of the story。 And finally, why does the "master" of the village HAVE to have a harem?! WHY。 THE FUCK。 IS THAT NECESSARY?! He's already petrifying anyone who opposes him, which is scary enough, why add the harem bit? Because he's a man? Well, of course! Because gender stereotypes go both ways, am I right?! *sigh* whatever, I'm so done with this。。。I'm honestly feeling really mixed about the series at this point。 On the one hand, I do really like the story and I'm curious to see where it goes, but I'm not pleased with this "make a tomboy traditionally feminine to infiltrate a man's harem" thing and have issues with some of the characters。 I've already pre-ordered volume 13, so we'll see where the story goes。 I swear though, if they take up the whole FUCKING volume with this harem infiltration bullshit, I'm gonna be so pissed。。。 。。。more
